Eckert's Apples

Eckert’s Home Grown Apples –
Selecting & Storing

Selecting Apples

There is approximately 7,000 different apple varieties grown worldwide. You could try a new variety each day for almost 20 years!

Selecting apples is the same regardless of variety. Look for apples that are free of bruises. Choose apples that are fragrant, and are firm to the touch.

Storing Apples

Remember that apples ripen 6 to 10 times faster at room temperature than they do refrigerated. If you are not eating them in a day or two, refrigerate them in the crisper. Apples should be stored by themselves. They emit ethylene gas which can cause other fruits and vegetables to decompose. If freezing, place apple slices on a cookie sheet. Once individual slices are completely frozen through, transfer to a plastic storage bag.
