Pick Your Own Kale with Eckert’s

Kale is having a serious moment, but we’ve long been a fan of this nutrient-dense, leafy green! Even though it’s lettuce-like in nature, kale is actually a member of the cabbage family. It’s an extremely popular pick among our health conscious customers because it’s rich in vitamins A and C, and provides ample calcium and iron. So go ahead and pile on the kale, it won’t hurt!

We offer pick-your-own kale at our Belleville farm, where families can come and enjoy hand-picked kale by the basketful. Once you’ve gathered your fair share, bring it home to put together delicious salads, pastas and fresh, sautéed side dishes to complement your best entrees. We’re happy to teach you how to pick kale, when to pick kale and just about everything else you need to know about bringing this versatile veggie home from the harvest.

Kale-Picking Guide: How, When and Where

There’s no real secret to picking your own kale at Eckert’s, but there are a few quick tips you should know for a good bounty. Select kale that’s dark green in color, with small to medium leaves (roughly the size of an adult hand). Naturally, you’ll want to steer clear of wilted, brown or discolored kale leaves. You can pick kale at our Belleville location during the summer, with the season typically extending from around early July to around mid-August.
